Last month at New York Comic Con, I stopped by the Yu-Gi-Oh! booth to gather some information about Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links along with Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution.
Let’s start with Link Evolution. I was able to speak with Fernando Bustamante to speak about the games recent launch on the Nintendo Switch and what the game brings for the new players.
Link Evolution originally arrived in 2015 for the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, now 4 years later, it has finally launched on the Nintendo Switch. While the game took a few years into the Switch lifecycle to make its appearance, it is possible because of fan feedback and of course the opportunity.
When Fernando and the rest of the team at Konami saw the Switch, they knew that their game would be perfect on the platform. Using the touch screen made it seem as if you were really playing the famous trading card game.
While the other platforms did have online multiplayer, the Switch version made it the perfect time to bring local multiplayer to the game due to the ease of having that second joy-con ready for your next match.
If you are like me and haven’t really played Yu-Gi-Oh since you were growing up, Link Evolution is a great way to get your foot back in the door. The games story is faithful to the anime so you can relive some storylines and replay special duels that also appeared in the show.
Each beginner match for the different eras will bring you to a tutorial so you can relearn how to make your moves, put down your cards and what moves you should or shouldn’t make. Teaching new players is something the developers really wanted to perfect so casual newcomers aren’t scared away.
Since the game did come out a few years back, it was a little weird to see it finally be ported to the Switch. When asked about the future of the game whether it be DLC or a possible sequel, they are both being considered. The Switch release brought in a lot of new players and the teams expectations of downloads were surpassed since the game launched. Let’s hope the new influx of players will bring some fresh content to this game that is still going strong.
Let’s move onto Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links!
Duel Links is the mobile version of the Yu-Gi-Oh card dueling game that you can also find on Steam.
Most recently, Duel Links added the new world, Dark Side of Dimensions. With this new addition, there are new characters you can unlock including a third character that players can now discover.
In addition to the new characters, there were also new card boxes introduced including Thunder Dragons which are very popular in the trading card game.
Having this game be very popular on mobile devices and having the Steam platform bring in a whole new demographic, I was wondering what the possibility was as to bringing this game to the Switch. The Switch has a huge following and the touch screen will make it perfect for this game. There is a possibility that the game will come to Switch and I was told to look out in a few months on any information regarding a Switch port, so we shall see what happens then.
Besides the Dark Side of Dimensions content that came to the game at the end of September, there are some upcoming events that you may want to keep your eye on.
In early 2020, Duel Links will be celebrating their third anniversary, and if history repeats itself, there will be an in game event to celebrate the milestone.
Another milestone that is upcoming is the game reaching 100 million downloads. As of writing this article, the game is currently over 90 million downloads so 100 is just around the corner.
Whether you are playing on your phone, PC or on the Switch, there are two great games out there to bring you into the Yu-Gi-Oh! world. Whether you are a newcomer just starting out with Link Evolution that will make your way to Duel Links for those speed duels. Or if you are already a Duel Links pro looking to take your talents to the console market, there is no better time to jump into the Yu-Gi-Oh universe than right now!
