After having the past two weeks of Not Too Late Show having some ‘Not Too Interesting’ episodes, Elmo and crew come back with a show that isn’t my favorite, but is definitely an improvement over the past two weeks.

This week, Elmo welcomed Blake Lively to the show, with a musical performance from Dan + Shay!

Blake Lively / Dan + Shay

Last week on the show, Elmo was riding a tricycle as he made his entrance to the Not Too Late Show stage. This episode, he is back to his usual, and awkward, walk up to his monologue marker.

As always, Elmo was happy to see us, and I was happy to see Elmo.

Elmo tells us that during his nap, there was a story playing in his mind. It is Cookie Monster that informs Elmo that a story that happens in your mind while you are sleeping is called a dream.

He then goes on to tell us about his dream. During Elmo’s dream, he was in the audience of the Not Too Late Show, but instead of him hosting, it was a chicken!

The chicken told the monologue joke: Why did the person cross the road?

The punchline was told in buck-bucks (or whatever noise a chicken makes). The audience is CRACKING UP, while Elmo is sitting there super confused.

I actually really liked that bit a lot. One of the highlights of the episode for me.

We cut to backstage where Oscar the Grouch is standing around the craft services table where Oscar is at first upset by the selection, but towards the end of the table is a large pile of garbage.

This is the second appearance of Oscar the Grouch. We originally saw him in the first episode where he was about to start his segment ‘Trash Talk’ but was told they were running out of time. I compared it to the Jimmy Kimmel / Matt Damon ‘feud.’

We cut back to Elmo and Cookie Monster sitting on the couch.

Cookie was mentioning that he had a dream where he was eating a giant marshmallow. Turns out, the giant marshmallow was his pillow, mattress, box spring and everything else. He coughs out a bedspring and Elmo gives a look to the camera like ‘What the heck is going on?’

Blake Lively comes and sits on the couch. Elmo cuts straight to the hard hitting questions like the TRUE journalist he is.

Elmo wants to know if Blake Lively would rather act like a gorilla for one minute, or sing ‘Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes’ while talking like a pirate? Blake decides that singing like a pirate is something that she would be interested in and she proceeds to perform.

She does mess up, but she recovers quickly to save the performance. (Still better than the Jordan Sparks performance from two weeks ago)

Elmo brings it back to the dream theme of this episode asking Blake if she has had any interesting dreams. Blake brings up a dream of her playing a delivery driver on Sesame Street, but it turns out that it actually happened. Elmo brings out a photo of the exact moment.

It is time again for the Random Contest Button! This time around, they will be playing Cookie Monster Says. Elmo describes it as Simon Says but with Cookie Monster.

They play through the game. Elmo wins the first round, while Blake wins the second round and the game in general because she gave Cookie Monster a cookie. Sounds like cheating. Pandering to the referee but I will let it slide.

It is time for the Dan + Shay performance. They perform a song that I never heard before but I’m going to guess that it is called ‘Visit the Moon.’

Correction, it is called ‘I Don’t Want to Live on the Moon.’

It is SO DAMN GOOD! Definitely one of my favorite performances on the show so far!

Elmo thanks them for coming on the show. He gifts both Dan and Shay a star nightlight.

It is time for Trash Talk with Oscar. He takes the stage and it is immediately hijacked by fairies and a unicorn. It turns out, Trash Talk is scheduled for the next day. So once again, Oscar gets the Matt Damon treatment by Elmo.

As with tradition, Elmo changes into his pajamas and sings us the Goodnight Song which recaps the show.

Elmo Loves You, You Are Special, Niiiiight, Niiiight!

Like I mentioned earlier, the past two episodes haven’t been my cup of tea. This episode is a nice return to what I like about the show.

Blake Lively is incredible in everything she does and she kills it yet again on the Not Too Late Show.

Dan & Shay is a duo that I have heard of but never really explored their work, this has since changed thanks to their performance on the show.

Let’s check on my new musical performances rankings!

1. Lil Nas X (Elmo’s World)

2. Jonas Brothers (Toothbrush Song)

3. Dan + Shay (I Don’t Want to Live on the Moon)

4. Kasey Musgraves (Rubber Ducky)

5. Joyous String Ensemble (Rubber Ducky, Sunny Days)

6. Pentatonix (Bedtime Story Medley)

7. Jordin Sparks (Itsy Bitsy Spider)

This performance was fantastic and while it was tough to decide whether it deserved the 3 or the 4 spot, I decided to give it the 3 spot due to me being blown away by a duo I never heard of along with a song that I never heard before.

It turns out that next week COULD possibly be my favorite episode because John Oliver from Last Week Tonight will be the guest.

Until next week, don’t forget…You are Loved, You are Special!
